About SCACS
Who we are
SCACS is a volunteer group of licensed ham radio operators based in Sequatchie County, Tennessee. We provide emergency and auxiliary communications support to local government agencies, served agencies, and the community during disasters, severe weather events, and other emergencies when normal communications infrastructure is disrupted.
We operate in coordination with the Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) under the American Radio Relay League (ARRL), and maintain close ties with the Sequatchie County Emergency Management Agency (EMA).
What we do
- Emergency communications — Backup voice and data links for EMA, Red Cross, and hospitals when infrastructure fails.
- Skywarn spotting — Trained NWS storm spotters reporting real-time severe weather across the Valley and Plateau.
- Public service — Communications support for community events, parades, and search-and-rescue operations.
- Licensing & training — We help newcomers get licensed and provide ongoing training for members at all levels.
Our area of operation
We primarily serve Sequatchie County and the Sequatchie Valley, with coordination extending into Bledsoe, Marion, and Grundy counties as part of regional emergency communication plans. The valley’s geography — surrounded by the Cumberland Plateau and Walden Ridge — makes reliable communications both critical and challenging, which is exactly where amateur radio excels.
Getting involved
Whether you hold a Technician, General, or Amateur Extra license — or are just thinking about getting licensed — there’s a place for you in SCACS. We hold regular nets and monthly meetings open to anyone interested in amateur radio or emergency preparedness.
